2012 was a huge year for the Khor Wakow School Project. We drilled the first-ever clean drinking water well in the Khor Wakow area in February. At that same time, we installed corn grinders, which allow girls to attend school under a tree, where it’s currently held. We authored and self-published the children’s book, David’s Journey – the Story of David Jal, one of the Lost Boys of the Sudan. The book became available for sale in September of this year. Book sales have been strong as have donations. Thus far we have sold approximately 1000 of the 5000 books we have in stock. Part of our success is surely owed to reporter Steve Young of the Argus Leader. Steve wrote a series of articles called, “South Dakota to South Sudan,” which ran for several weeks in the Argus. Steve’s work brought to life the trip that Steve, David Jal, and Joel Hirschman made in February of 2012 and brought awareness of our project to the extensive Argus readership. Along with the publishing of the book came a new website with ecommerce capabilities. Thanks to Jon Strunk for donating his talents in creating this user-friendly and attractive site! We have many people and organizations to thank. We have been blessed to have received the support of so many individuals, churches, schools, and organizations in the region and beyond. Thank you, thank you, thank you to our donors, volunteers, and supporters!
We have lots to do in 2013. We have our mission to fulfill, which is building a school in the Khor Wakow village area. We have David and Laura Jacobs booked like rock stars with appearances already slated for Rotary West, Sioux Falls School District, Good News Church, Rosa Parks School, and Humboldt, West Central Schools. We will be selling books and telling David’s story wherever we can. Please contact us to book David and Laura. Even though they are clearly rock stars, we still have dates available! We will be hosting our annual fundraising dinner again this year with a date to be determined soon. We will be applying for grants with the help of volunteer grant writers. If you are aware of a grant we may be eligible for, please let us know. Most of all, keep us in your prayers. We wish everyone a very happy, healthy, and prosperous 2013!
